An Artist's Life!

How "flip flops" taught me how to live my true colorful self!

I took a look into my closet last month, and saw all BLACK, GRAY, and BROWN---with a teenie tiny dash of teal. I am not sure how I got here, because being an artist I have always LOVED color. And I mean LOVED! Heck, our home is FILLED with beautiful colors....just not my closet???? When I hit my menopausal era (around 48---and I am now 60), I started putting on weight, seeing wrinkles and all that goes with getting older. Even though I dressed others in color and beauty and I always wore "artful fashion" just not in color, I was...

What does one do when your path takes an unexpected course?

I can't believe that it has been almost 2 months since I last wrote!  But, sometimes life throws you curves and time just slips by.... I have been an artist since 1982 and became a jewelry designer in 1994, and then opened a boutique on April 9, 2008.  So obviously my journey's always seem to take me on different paths----some expected, some not. How in the world does one "market" a customer????

I truly believe this is one of the most difficult things to accomplish as a retail boutique but the most important...because a customer's wants/needs are an ever moving target in the retail industry! A retail fashion boutique is all about what a customer 'wants---not a need'; and that alone makes your marketing plan EXTREMELY important and one that you must always be on top of your game about. (image via Start-Up Fashion) As you can see the "marketing" plan is a MASS of information. Even though I have a degree in marketing, times are a changin'! With all the new...

The "Secret" of Planning....

a retail boutique!  Here is what I went through when I took my "dream of a boutique" to "planning" it....and trust me the thought of "build it and they will come" CANNOT be a part of your planning thoughts! (Pic from my boutique) First, I have to be honest---I HATE paperwork! Being an artist, I am more "visual" and it took many months of writing a business plan (which you can find all kinds of examples on the internet). That being said, I adjusted the typical business plan to meet my wants and needs and the most important thing---I made...
